New Tyres

Do you know the law?

UK law states that tyres should be over 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the whole tyre

Driving with tyres under the legal limit risks a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

It is recommended that you change your tyre before they get to 1.6mm  to ensure that you are able to stop in hazardous driving conditions.

You will also have to ensure that your tyres are in roadworthy condition for your car to pass its MOT test.

Test Your Tyres

A quick and easy way to see if your tyre tread exceed the minimum legal tread depth is to take the 20p test.

Simply place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. If the outer band of the coin is visible, then your tyres may be illegal and unsafe and should be checked immediately by a qualified tyre professional.

When taking the test, remember to check at least three locations around each tyre. As the test is so quick and easy, stay safe by checking your tyres at least once a month.

Look After Your Tyres

Ensuring that your tyres are kept at the correct tyre pressure will help to extend the life of your tyres and could help with fuel consumption. Your vehicle will have a plate usually on the door which will specify the most suitable pressure for the tyres for your vehicle you should check the tyre pressure regularly.

You should check your tyres regularly for tread depth using the above method or you can buy a tyre tread gauge from reputable car maintenance shops such as Halfords. You should also check your tyres for any damage such as bulging or cuts especially if you have recently hit a pot hole or been involved with sudden heavy breaking.
